I have the same problem and have not found any replies in the archive.

In the demo file 'logobar' substitutions of type __COMPANY__ work but [var COMPANY] does not.

I also have a general question as to what the [var XXX] tag does, how does it differ from 
the macro substitution __XXXX__ I have been unable to find reference to it in the docs.

My system info......minivend 3.12, PERL 5.005_02,, BSDI 4.01, gdbm-1.7.3
