Yes!

Maybe, you have not start the minivendserver? (i.e. ../mvend/bin/start )

You can install MV anywhere! But it is secure to install MV outside the
publicroot!

Yes! I have FreeBSD stable, Perl 5.05, Apache 1.3.6.....

There are some way, i.e. using crontab!

This is a feature of MV! If MV know where the httpd.cfg is, MV get more
information (i.e. path of the web directory, web server name and so on)
to set the directory of the MV-shop. But it is not important! If you
make a shop (.../mvend/bin/makecat) you can set all names and path (i.e.
company name, catalogs directory, html-documentroot, etc.).
