Generate Gift Certificate Code

Hello,

I am endeavoring to implement a Gift Certificate feature with minivend.
Does anyone know how I can generate a random number/letter sequence to make
as a 'code' for each gift certificate?  Possibly something similar to how
the session ID is generated.
