It is most likely a corrupted file or at one time you did and FTP transfer
of a page(s) in binary not text. Perl is very non-forgiving in this. 

I chased down a similar problem a year or so ago when a client told me "no
I sent everything as text" I then did a bit dump and you can see the
garbage in the file.
