Locale problem....cyrilic text not found in database

Hi,
As ususal, those of us using cyrilic (Bulgaria, Rusia) have troubles :-)
Well, to the point :
I have database in cyrillic and when I try to 'search' - everythings
is OK
until I enter some cyrillic text - "search string not Found" is the
answer.
I've had such a problem recently, but using
use POSIX;
setlocale ...blah.. blah..
resolved the problem.
I see the minivend docs have something about locales, but, frankly
speaking I DID not understand - where, how, etc...
my current LANG environment is ru_RU.KOI8-R...
Ok, that's enough, please help...
