Off-Topic: Application for UserDB.
****** message to minivend-users from Jayme Frye <jfrye@ehg.net> ******
Hello All,
This is an off topic muse on an application for the UserDB.
I have been playing with a GPL'd PHP3 app called E*Reminders which is
very slick. It allows a user to set up one-time or reoccurring email
reminders. They set an email address, account password, date of event,
time of event, local time zone, reminder message, whether the reminder
will be reoccurring and how often it will reoccur, and whether to send
the reminder in advance of the event time and how far in advance. A cron
job fires off a PHP3 script every 5 min. to pull any pending reminders
and email them. The email contains the customer reminder data but you
can stick in some sales copy too. It stores data from a fairly simple
MySQL database with two tables one with user account info (email address
which is acts as user id, and password), the other with reminder data.
The app works great as PHP3 but I can only get it to execute properly
in html space, forcing users to leave their MiniVend session which
causes problems for some users with firewall, browser, and proxy issues.
Also, it seems to me that it would be a great use of MiniVends UserDB,
not to mention a great perk for users of a catalog site and a opt-in
sales tool for the catalog owner.
So, knowing that my Perl skills are well below the Guru level I'm
wondering if anyone else might want to help hack this together with me?
I think the basic program logic can be borrowed from the PHP3 scripts.
We would just need to MiniVendize it probably adding some user tags or
global subs and arrange the User DB to handle the required fields. Easy
enough. 8-)
You can check out E*Reminders at

And of course the resulting app would return to MiniVend users.
Happy MiniVending
