I have a guess, AFAIK minivend uses crypt. To protect a system from sneaky
little programs that search for simple passwords, the version of crypt
installed on a system may possibly terminate the calling program after a
certain number of unsuccessful calls, e.g. 1.
There are many more reasons why crypt may not work in a perl installation,
but check CPAN for other possibilities. UserDB authentication should work
with other algorithms.
Good luck
