Upgrade path from 3.08 to 3.12

Is there a simple upgrade path/ routine?
I have previously upgraded between versions and had to re-write large chunks
of my applications. Since htere was no documentation on any upgrade process,
I went through the whole installation and the makecat routines for each
application, then studiously went through my applications and debugged any
changes. This was a lot of work and if I do it, I want it to be as easy as
possible.
However, I have a client who really wants the sorting bug-fix as provided in
3.12.
It seems to me that the way to do this is as follows:
1) First, try the following out on a test machine!!!:
2) Delete and re-make the demo catalog
3) Check the catalog.cfg files for major changes and flags for backwards
compatability.. make the appropriate changes to the other config files
4) Add the catalogs to the minivend.cfg files and hope for the best!
5) Make any changes and test, test,test..
6) Put onto production machine!
