Hmm. I may be badly mistaken, but ISTR that the mySQL libraries are
reqired on the client (IRIX) machine in order to build the perl DBD::mysql
libraries which enable minivend to connect to the (Linux) mySQL server. 

Try

perl -e 'use DBD::mysql; print "I have mySQL\n"' 

on the client box, just to make sure.

In these situations, your best bet would probably be DBD::Proxy, which
allows the use of databases on remote machines w/o installing client
libraries.

It does mean adding another layer of processing/setup/complexity, but it
should work.
