scratch variables and MV Tags

I want to save the value of [subtotal noformat=1] in a scratch
variable. I tried the following:

[set variablename][subtotal noformat=1][/set]

If I use [scratch variablename] I get the following output:
"[subtotal noformat=1]"


In variablename the string is saved, not the value... How can I
save the value of [subtotal] in a scratch variable ????
