default mv_min_string

What is the default mv_min_string ? (3.12beta6).
And actualy, how to make it work ?
Till now, I can't make it to do what I want - to restrict (force) the user
to enter something as mv_search_spec.... with at least mv_min_string
character length.
I realy need some advice.
