What does Inventory do ?!!

Hi everyone,

What's the use of the inventory: yes, I know, it's an arbitrary database
stating how many items are in stock for each product, but that qty. stays
the same, no matter how many items I order.

There are a couple of tags on the top of report.html, "touch inventory",
"write inventory": what do they do: I don't see anything changing in
inventory.asc.

Is this the way it's supposed to be or do I have a misconfiguration
somewhere ?
