further info on INET vs UNIX modes

Does anyone know where there might be further info on using INET and
UNIX socket modes beyond the docs. I have a couple questions about them.

First, the docs say INET mode is needed to communicate with other
minivend servers, in particular is it needed to _send_ data to other
servers, _receive_ it, or both? 

Secondly, is there a known why to start minivend via the inetd.conf
file, rather than the 
rc.local method?
