Personally, I like the Stevens books.

UNIX sockets are used to perform inter process communictions
between processes on the same box. Generally, and I know of
no exceptions, UNIX domain sockets are faster than INET domain
sockets. INET sockets use the TCP protocol, and are not limited
to communicating with processes on a single box.
