thanks steve,

that was the problem. i installed minivend as root and then did a chown
-R minivend mvend.
i still had an error though. it was saying a syntax error again in
catalog.cfg saying something about /simple.
so i put a # in front of /simple in the catalog.cfg file and the problem
went away. i wonder why the install script does this?

so now, after three weeks of stuffing around with vlink and tlink and
catalog.cfg errors, i finally have the demo catalog up! phew.

i can now go and talk to my wife! it would really be good for an
installation section for new users and really spelling everything out
exactly.
