You can run Minivend as yourself. It's recommended that it run as a
special 
pseudo-user, usually named, mvend, or minivend for better security (more
on that in the docs).
As part of that security, this user "minivend" may not be able to log
in, and only the root
user maybe able to run processes as that user. Perhaps that's what's
happening on your
system.
