[ic] Processing partial order with 4.9 interface - HOW?

The new 4.9 interface is great overall, but partial order in the new 4.9
order status interface have me stumped.  No longer can you "check" the items
that ship and have the others "backorder" automatically, sending the
customer the appropriate e-mail.

Setting "Shipped" as the status field values for the order line items
manually for 2 out of 3 line items and pressing "Ship per status above"
results in ALL items being listed as "backordered".  Worse yet, my customers
would receive an e-mail indicating the entire order was backordered.

Can anyone help?  If the old "check to ship" interface still somehow
compatible with 4.9?
