Did this, restarted, logged out, logged in, removed
component from page in Admin UI, re-added component,
no joy.

Just for fun I tried this:
   promo_type:
          label: Promotion type
 +        options: specials=Specials, new=New items,
demos=Demos
          widget: select
 -       lookup: featured
 -       db: merchandising


That didn't work either.  

Grepped on "promo_type" and got some hits in session,
blew away everything under session, repeated above,
still no joy.
