[ic] ic 4.8.5 foundation - ml=N *sometimes* works

The ml=20 in the search url below works as expected.

but if I use this type of search

<A HREF="[area search="
         ml=20
         st=text
         sf=prod_group
         se=Books
"]">CLICK</A>

the ml=20 isn't obeyed. Can someone tell me why???
