It has been done. But I wouldn't know the first thing about
it. :-) Please see the mailing list archives and the documentation about
Malls. There are a lot of business-type questions that need to be answered
before the technical questions.

You can create new catalogs by copying from an existing template, or using
your own template with makecat. As far as I know, no one has customized
the admin for creating new catalogs. That would be a nice addition, if
anyone is up to it.
