[mv] Checkout Fails with Earthlink email address

This is so weird. We are running MV4 and everything has
been up and running for some time now. All of the sudden,
whenever someone attempts to place an order with an
earthlink.net email address, a timeout occurs and and a
server error is displayed. The order itself goes through
and is saved, but the email is not sent and the cart is
not emptied. As you can imagine, some customers go right
back and place the order a second, third time. (not good)

Any other email address works just fine. Even an invalid
email address works goes through. But for some reason 
earthlink customers are causing an error. This really has 
me stumped. If the server has a problem sending an email, it 
should just bounce back, right? Any suggestions on where
to look to correct this problem would be GREATLY appreciated.
