[mv] sql data

I'm now trying to set a bunch of scratch variables based on [data
session arg] via any type of sql query.
[set name=ratioID interpolate=1][data art::ratioID::[data session
arg]][/set]
returns ] into the scratch.
the ] is one of the brackets that follows [data session arg]. Leaving
one of them out causes it to return nothing, and does not cause a syntax
error. Any ideas to why, or another way to do this?
