One-button searches stopped working

I'm sure this is probably a stupid newbie question, but I've been ripping 
my hair out over it for almost a week now.  I've been working with the 
Simple demo catalog.  I added my own items to the end of the list, and 
added a few more categories.  I also edited the leftpage file in the pages/ 
directory to add one-button searches for my new categories.   Everything 
was working fine at first.  But then as I started adding more items, the 
one-button searches stopped working.  All the new items, and even some of 
the old things from the "Art Store" don't come up when I click the 
one-button searches.  If I do a manual search by item desc. or item number, 
I see all my things just fine.  And they even show up in the right 
category.  I've tried adding more items, and that doesn't work.  I've tried 
taking items out, and that doesn't work either.  The products.asc.category 
file auto-updated fine, if I cat it, it has a list of all the items in 
their respective categories.  I'm not sure what went wrong.  I am not using 
any database front-end, just the internal ASCII-text based files.  HELP!
