[set] suggestions

Hi everybody!
I am trying to set a variable based on a search....for me it is a little
complicated to explain, so im going to give some examples to illustrate:
I want to assign a variable to a search-result....ive tried stuff like
[set eclient]
[item-field email-client]
[/set]

hoping that the variable 'eclient' would be filled with the result of
[item-field email-client], but instead, when i try the [value eclient] i
get:
[item-field email-client] (literally)

how can i give the variable the value of the result??
i also tried in the sarch=
va=var=variable
and few other stuff without results.
Any suggestions or help greatly appreciated.
