Making it look different is the easy part. There is little to be gained
from attempting to re-write the sample - however, modifying it to suit your
needs is a must.
I would recommend buying a good book on HTML, finding a Graphic Design
student to help with site design and spend plenty of time scoping out your
competition and 'view source'ing their sites to get a feel for how it is done.
