I'd put the search in a custom page instead of the standard results page.
Then you can just build the select statement yourself.  I haven't done
this using standard input fields but I believe you can reference any
cgi var via [value cgi-variable]

[sql type=list 
   query="select * from atable where field1 like '% [value inputfield] %' 
   or field2 like '% [value inputfield] %'"]
