I had this problem too, but it turned out that I was running things out
of NFS space.  Of course, domain sockets don't work over NFS, so I had
to move things to local disk.

I was unable to get INET mode to work. 

One other interesting problem...  Keeping ~minivend in NFS with a symlink
for ~minivend/etc pointing to local disk didn't work either.
