listing of categories-help

Hello,
I would like to create a list of categories for my minivend.

I have items seperated into "stores".
Each "store" has seperate categories.
Categories contain multiple items.

I have read and tried several different ways of doing this.
None of them worked exactly right.
sometimes I get all of the categories available.
sometimes I get none.

Could someone please help?
I need code for calling page and code for new results page.
I want to keep regular results page as is.
The sf=category and se=video  etc...
The category list needs to only list unique.
While I'm at it has anyone come up with a way of returning number of
items within a category?
like this:

Video:Travel (50 available)?
