MiniMate Access Problem

Dear minivend-users,

I have been fighting with MiniMate authentication. I put a NON-empty .access file in MiniMate/pages/config directory. In the
catalog.cfg, I have added

Variable    MV_NO_CRYPT 1
RemoteUser  demo
Password    byowner

I do get an authentication screen following htt://www.domain.com:7786/simple/config/menu

But the problem is no matter what user name and password I enter, it won't accept. I have also tried the superuser "minivend" and
its password.

I have searched all FAQ and emails archives..still no clue.

Anybody can give me a hint? (version 3.11)
