results page broken on static build

I have implemented a catalog using MV3.12 and I am trying to get the static
pages feature of MV to work.  So far I have it building the pages as
expected with one problem...

The results pages that are built from links from my catalog.html page (for
different product categories) are not complete.  MV is not building a
complete scan1, scan2,... pages.  It is only building part of the last item
of the search loop and the bottom of the page.  i.e. no body tags, no head,
none of the top of the page, none of the first 50 items that should be
there.

I have the [tag flag build][/tag] in the results page.  I understand (at
least I thought) that this should solve issues with dynamic tags in this
page.

I have read the docs and search the mail list archives, what am I missing?
