new installation

hi,
i installed minivend 3.14 on a rh5.2 box.
the install appears to have gone smoothly, but when i try to enter the
'simple'
demo store i eventually get the "we're either out of service or under
heavy load"
message.
i've verified that minivend is running as the specified user and that
the 'simple' executable is in fact being launched as a result of the
browser's http request (this is also apparent since the 'simple'
executable generated the above-mentioned error message).
it seems that 'simple' is unable to communicate with minivend.
given that simple is executing and minivend is in fact running, where
should i look to resolve this problem?
no errors are reported in 'error.log' in the minivend root directory.
