Tracing things back a little further, I see that ImageDirSecure is used when
something called Https_on is true. In Http.pm, Https_on is associated with
the string "HTTPS" in a table which looks like a list of CGI environment
variables.

I take this to mean that an SSL web server is supposed to set the HTTPS
environment variable for CGIs. Did I get this right? because my web server
isn't setting that variable. If that's the problem, I can start harassing my
web server vendor (RedHat) for a fix.
