Problems with the demo

I've had some problems with the Demo in minivend.  I can get the first page
and the faq and document buttons work at the bottom, but the 'Enter the
Store' and 'frames' and 'no frames' buttons do not work.  The problem seems
to be the link to the cgi-bin.  My question, does the cgi-bin directory have
to exist in www space or can it exist elsewhere?  It seems that the setup
wants to require the cgi-bin to be located in www space which seems like a
bad idea.  Thanks for helping out with this newbie question.
