perl problem ... non critical but still very currious

This morning as an experiment i tried installing minivend on two different
machines. Here is what happened:


On one machine it seemed to install perfectly fine. Then while running 

/home/httpd/mvend/bin/makecat simple

it produced a segmentation fault and would go no further. 





The second machine gave me this ugly error upon installing minivend

I recalled a post about perl threads causing this error or something like
it so i reinstalled perl without threads and the same error came up again. 


I understand that most problems like this in the past have been to poor
perl installs I suspect that this case is not an exception to that general
rule. Both machines have had multiple upgrades of perl, have had many
installations of many moduals and are rather "dirty perls". 

what im curious about is what about the perl installations would cause
these problems?

Please understand this problem isnt mission critical but i would like to
investigate it to learn about minivend/perl and how they interact.
