Simple Upgrade Path? Docmentation?

Comrades!

With different versions of MV coming out regularly with added functionality
and bug-fixes, it would suggest that many users who download are probably
doing so to upgrade an existing installation. However, there is absolutely
no documentation on any upgrade processes.

Now, due to client demand, I need to upgrade to 3.12. from 3.08. I have
previously done an upgrade the hard way... basically starting with a fresh
installation and adding catalogs back in bit by bit.

I now have more catalogs and less time, so I'm looking for a simple upgrade
path!

Questions:

1) Do I really need to re-compile vlink?

2) Can I just extract the files and copy over the library files?

3) If so, could I then just copy over the new config files and edit them
accordingly to match the existing installation.

Any pointers gratefully accepted... has anyone any experiences they want to
share?

If there is no simple path, could everyone at least give me their views and
experiences so that these can be put together in a document.
