shipping by unit-shipping cost and not by cumulative weight?

hello,

we continue to be baffled by a development problem for a second week. 
namely, how do we get minivend to look up ups shipping cost (based on
weight and zone) for each item in the shopping cart and then add the
shipping costs together for the total shipping cost.
as you know, minivend wants to add the WEIGHTS of all the items and then
consult the .csv charts for a single shipping cost to any particular zone. 
this won't work for our client.
our client gets an item into their warehouse, slaps their own label on it,
and ships it out.
our client does no repackaging. so, for example, 2 identical 14-lb items
shipped to the same address cost 2 times the ups 14-lb shipping cost, and
not the cheaper 28-lb shipping cost.
this problem has stumped 2 developers. 
in our own crude investigation, we (not minivend experts by any means) came
upon the possibility (in mv documentation) of substituting QUANTITY as
shipping criteria instead of WEIGHT.
we made this substitution in the 3rd column of the shipping.asc file.
however, it then took the quantity ordered, for example, 4 of the same
item, and simply interpreted the '4' to be 4 lbs and gave us the shipping
weight for a single 4-lb item and not, as we'd hoped, for 4 14-lb items
shipped at a cost of 4 times a single 14-lb item shipped to a particular zone.
we value the help we have received from the minivend-users list in the
past; this is the first time we've been so stuck on an issue.
we have seen the question raised in the mail list archives, but it wasn't
never answered from what we could tell.
we seek either a compadre who can tell us how they've overcome this
obsticle or a minivend specialist who can do it for a price.
