I also tried to use access control on all of my minivend pages, but to no avail. I finally just created a subdir called controlled and linked everything that needed security in there.
IF you could find which module is responsible for checking the existence of the .access file...
OK, its the readin subroutine of Util.pm...
You should be able to adjust it to make it check for the .access file in the main directory too.
