How to change shipping weight depending on item size?

We are building a catalog to sell vinyl fabric that comes in various-sized
rolls. It's going well, but we are having difficulty having Minivend
calculate our shipping costs. 

The dealer uses weight to determine shipping costs. And in our catalog,
each item's weight is determined by the Item Modifier SIZE. 

As we understand it, Minivend should go through all the items in the
shopping basket, add their weights and use that to look up the UPS shipping
cost. 

How do we go about changing the weight for each item depending on what size
is selected?

We have heard that it can be done in perl, but we are basically html-ers.
Is there another way? Or is there a perl solution we can adapt to our needs? 

(MV documentation suggests we use the DATA tag, which looks up or changes a
value in products.asc, but we tried using it and we kept getting Internal
Server Error. Is the DATA tag indeed the solution, and if so, how do we
make it work?)

At this point we are thinking we might have to put a separate SKU for each
size, and do away with the Item Modifier altogether. But this seems like a
cheap solution, and we'd rather do it the right way. 

We've had great luck with finding solutions on the Minivend-Users Mail List
so far and are hoping somebody can help us out on this one.
