setting scratch variables in embedded perl

I am trying to set a scratch variable ncount and
recall it latter in the page. The following displays
27 for the first line but nothing on the second line.
This is just a simplified version of what I am trying
to do, eventually I will expand this code to rotate
through the "new stock" items and I have the rest
figured out, but need to get the following to work.

[perl]$Safe{'scratch'}{'ncount'} = 27;[/perl]<br>
[scratch ncount]<br>


Any ideas out there?
