Adding item to basket without displaying basket page

Has anyone tried this? The idea is to add something to your basket
without explicitly looking at it. I've rigged up something using a new
"special" page with a history.go(-1) in the body.onLoad which works
great -- item is added, user is taken back where they came from.
Problem is, the page doesn't refresh so I can't change my indicator that
says "order / already ordered." Tried onClick=location.refresh and a
few other things to no avail. Any ideas?
