testing for total number of items in cart

I can't figure out how to get something like this to work:

        [if explicit]
                [condition]
                        return 1 if '[nitems]' > 6;
                        return 0;
                [/condition]
                        too many
                [else]
                        okay
                [/else]
        [/if]

If the above approach is heading in the wrong direction, is there another way to
access the total number of items in the shopping cart besides [nitems]?  How do
I do some sort of test/if on the number of items?

Any help is appreciated...
