help with shipping formulas

I have a field in my products table called shipmod. What I would like to
do is use this value as a multiplier in a shipping formula. This is
what I have currently which works:
f 4.5 + (.50 * @@TOTAL@@)
what I am attempting with no luck is something like:
f 4.5 + (.50 * @@TOTAL@@ * [item-field shipmod])
but I receive the error
Shipping mode 'aps': bad formula. Returning 0.
What am I doing wrong?
