Added fields to checkout.html do not record

I added the following two fields to checkout.html:

<td ALIGN="RIGHT"><b>[L]* Social Security Number[/L]</b></td>
<td ALIGN="LEFT"><input TYPE="text" NAME="ssn" VALUE="[value ssn]"
size="20"> </td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td ALIGN="RIGHT"><img WIDTH="12" HEIGHT="12" SRC="redball.gif"> </td>
<td ALIGN="RIGHT"><b>[L]** Birthday[/L]</b></td>
<td ALIGN="LEFT"><input TYPE="text" NAME="Birthday" VALUE="[value Birthday]"
size="20"> </td>
</tr>
The problem is that it doesn't send or record the values. Is there one more
step that I need to do?
