Error acepting Canadian postal codes

I apparently have a configuration problem somewhere.  Canadian customers
of one of our clients cannot enter their postal code.  After the Place
Order button is pressed, an error page is displayed with:

  Error:  zip=zip

I didn't find anything in the docs or faq.  Any pointers where to look?
This is MV 3.12b6.
