Capturing errors

I need help on this one... We allow people to enter the part number or
SKU and then click an ADD THIS ITEM button. The problem, if the part
isn't in the database, when the screen refreshes, how can I test for
this and inform the person why the part didn't get added to their
basket? I see that there are the [DATA SESSION FAILURE] but that only
seems to work on extreme failures...
