Red Hat, Perl and Minivend

****** message to minivend-users from Mi-Recordz <mi-r@mi-recordz.com> ******

Here's a summary of what it took to get MiniVend3.11 working on my Red
Hat 5.2 system.

Red Hat 5.2, Perl-5.004m7-1 and MiniVend 3.11. I had problems with
Minivend and the Version of Perl that came with my RH5.2 distro:

Use of uninitialized value at /usr/lib/perl5/Text/ParseWords.pm line 73,

<GLOBAL
> chunk 280.

Numerous references to wrong or buggy versions of Perl tipped me off and

without a great deal of thought I upgraded to perl-5.004m7-1.i386.rpm (I

think this is a developer version, not sure...) and ran "rpm -uvh
perl-5.004m7-1.i386.rpm". The "-u" is an upgrade switch. The perl
5.005... requires the newer glibc, I forget the version number. I didn't

want to deal with upgrading glibc so that's how I came to
Perl-5.004m7-1. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a better version to
have chosen.

Then of course after a few "Not Found...." messages I decided to set up
ScriptAlias in my <VirtualHost></VirtualHost>
Apache virtual host:

<VirtualHost mi-recordz.com>
ServerAdmin rtp@mi-recordz.com
DocumentRoot /home/mi-r/www/html
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin /home/mi-r/www/cgi-bin
ServerName www.mi-recordz.com
ErrorLog logs/mi-recordz.com-error_log
TransferLog logs/mi-recordz.com-access_log
</VirtualHost>

In retrospect, the set up should have been relatively painless.
Unfortunately, I didn't really know what I was doing so it took a day
and a half. Hopefully, this will enlighten rather than confuse. I am
sure there's plenty of RH users. If they're not already using MiniVend
they probably will.

One reason I am posting my experience is because I took note of some
peoples frustration with the mailing list and have decided to hell with
my personal pride. I have observed the guidelines for usage of the
mailing list which appear to be common sense. I am going to share my
experience as best I can and when I am enveloped into the vortex with no

way out, I am going to ask for help.

I have to add that I am excited as hell to be starting my first on-line
venture. Applications like Linux, Apache, Perl and MiniVend have made my

pipe dream plausible. My thanks to everyone!
