RE: shipping, no of packages etc..

****** message to minivend-users from Tim Shea <tim@valutech.net> ******

Hi Michael,

This is an issue I'd very much like to work on. Although I don't yet know perl, so can't
develop a complete solution to this problem, I have spent considerable time thinking
about the process of more accurately calculating freight in a multi-package situation.

Some of the situations which should be covered in a complete solution:

Mark in database how many items are delivered in a case.
Configurable maximum packed box weight.

Then, to process a shipping estimate:
 1. Calculate shipment costs for all items which are 1 to a case (like a monitor)
 2. Calculate shipment costs for all items which are 90-100% of a case quantity.
 3. Starting with the heaviest item, calculate shipment costs for each box until it has
not quite reached the maximum packed box weight.

Points that are too complicated to consider, to me at least:

Item dimensions and shipping box dimensions.

Cheers,
Tim
