text for product attributes rather than a selection

Hi,

I've been getting up to speed with minivend, but have become stuck with a
rather unique requirement.

I'm trying to set a product attribute as plain text, rather than a fixed
selection of items (for example, some text to be printed on a t-shirt).
Therefore, instead of using the [item-accessories a] tag to generate the
list, I've done something like this for flypage.html :

<INPUT TYPE="text" NAME="mv_order_footype" VALUE="enter something here">

When this is passed to the basket I have this line :

<INPUT TYPE="text" NAME="[modifier-name footype]" VALUE="[value \
	[modifier-name footype]]">

But whatever was entered as mv_order_footype, this is blanked when I load
this page.

I've added "UseModifier footype" in catalog.cfg.  I'm worried that this is
an impossible task (maybe the software checks against a list of possible
values before progressing?)

any ideas?
