Shipping Problem - Need the Customers to add a shipping charge

Ok -
    Got something that I just cant get to work...
Anyone got any ideas? Here's the question -

I am using the script to sell High dollar items (5-25,000$ items) and the
customers normally figure their own shipping charges (due to long distance
and random differences in the shipping of Over The Road Carriers), so on the
"checkout" page, I need to add a field so they can input a "shipping" cost
that will total with the rest of the Order / Quote (they can also use the
script to create an online quote for job cost purposes).
I initially started using the mv_shipping , but I could not get it to total
with the [total-cost] tag, so it doesn't do what I need it to (unless I am
doing the mv_shipping wrong)

How can I add the shipping total on the fly rather than force a lookup?

Please help !
