Re: Recommendations for learning Perl
****** message to minivend-users from Frank Miedreich <miedreich@acm.org> ******
My suggestions:
- Web:
There is an online review of quite a few perl books at:
http://language.perl.com/critiques/index.html
A starting point for web based perl docs is:
http://language.perl.com/info/documentation.html
The starting point on the web for everything perl is of course:
http://www.perl.com/
- On your computer:
The most important starting point for the very comprehensive perl
documentation is available with every perl installation:
man perl
The perl faq is also on your system:
man perlfaq
- Books I am very happy with:
Programming Perl, 2nd ed. (O'Reilly): a must have by Larry Wall, Tom
Christiansen, and Randal L. Schwartz
And what got me started with perl:
Learning Perl, 2nd ed. (O'Reilly): by Randal L. Schwartz and Tom Christiansen
- The relevant perl newsgroups are:
comp.lang.perl.moderated (sometimes quite esoteric)
comp.lang.perl.misc (very high volume)
Try to be very sure that any questions you ask in one of the perl
newsgroups is not covered in the docs or answered in the faq. Asking a
question covered in the faq, or unrelated to perl (e.g. cgi problems) is a
sure fire way to collect lots of mail telling you to read the docs, and
usually you will also get in touch with Tom Christiansen himself, with many
suggestions what you do in the future before you posting.
Have fun.
